2024 is shaping up to be the year of the airdrop and dozens of protocols have announced points programs.

Points are the new yield farming. In the past, protocols launched with a token right away to bootstrap liquidity. The problem was that farmers would dump the token right away, causing a crash in yields and the token price. This led to most incentives programs dying out quickly—protocols that weren’t able to capture sticky users during that initial bump of farming often died out.

Points are an indication that a protocol plans to do an airdrop in the future and which actions they value. By accumulating points, you are setting yourself up to receive a lump sum when that protocol eventually launches a token.
